The school district does not own any deep fryers and the food items commonly thought to be deep fried are actually oven baked.
The chocolate milk we serve is skim milk. It does have 2 ¾ teaspoons more sugar in it compared to white milk, but we would much rather see the students getting the necessary calcium and dairy needs than not at all. Information nationally has shown that schools which do not allow flavored milk lose 37% milk consumption and this is at a time when our children need the calcium the most.
The BVSD child nutrition program has 7 full service kitchens and does not satellite foods out from a central kitchen. This increases labor and equipment costs. The food is prepared on site providing a high- quality meal for your children.
We want to serve meals the students will eat. In this day and age, we are seeing fewer homemade meals and more meals eaten out. We need to slowly swing the pendulum back to scratch cooking. It took some time to get to this point and it will take some time for us to swing it back. We need to work together on this.
